Winter Guard Mid-season Design Check-list

Published by Tori Angel on

Let’s revitalize our seasons with simple questions!

It is nearing the start of our competitive seasons! Now, more than ever, we are pulled in so many directions while leading our groups. Since we don’t want our show design to be on the back burner, here are some quick questions to ask yourself and your staff to enhance your production.

Meet your students where they are: theme and concept

  • Are there GE moments in your show that you can better fit your student’s performance quality?
  • Have you created a design map to ensure the quality of your design?
  • Have you scheduled a time for outside staff to come to give advice to you and/or your students about your show?

Meet your students where they are: Choreo and Design

  • Is your work achievable for your students? (consider your timeline)
  • Have you made count sheets for your music to support your students?
  • Should you edit any tosses (lower or higher rotations)?
  • Have you set goals for students to achieve harder skills later in the season?
  • Do they have time to work on these skills?
  • Are there speed changes you can consider?

Have a clear focal point

  • After creating your choreography, how do your layers complement one another?
  • Can you add or subtract any layers of choreography to create clarity?

Remember depth in spaces with highs and lows!

Create Levels

  • How do the moments of your show vary from one another?
  • How much of your floor do you use?
  • Have you considered density?

Edit over time

  • Do you need to add or subtract from your soundtrack for more theme clarity?
  • Have you changed body direction of work (example: some performers facing back and front during one moment)
